Our Story

We are a passionate, Chinese-hyphenated family whose lives are a rich tapestry woven from diverse languages and cultures. Both of us are first-generation immigrants - Kai Chin was born in Taipei, and Chloe Elise in Chengdu. We moved with our families to the US and Australia at the ages of 8 and 10, respectively. Throughout our teens and twenties, we navigated the full spectrum of emotions common to the immigrant experience: social exclusion, cultural rejection, and identity confusion.

In our twenties, driven by a desire to reconnect with our roots and seek new opportunities, we returned to the East and settled in Shanghai. This vibrant metropolis, a melting pot that has harmonized Chinese and Western cultures for over 150 years, became the backdrop where we met, married, and ultimately found our true selves.

We embraced our inherent contradictions: although English is now our preferred language, there are moments when only Mandarin can capture our thoughts. While congee and chicken broth are our comfort foods, we can't resist indulging in pizza and chocolate cake daily. Despite the feelings of rejection and confusion we faced in the Western societies where we grew up, there are times when this homeland feels so unfamiliar that we truly feel like outsiders.

Realizing that we didn’t fully belong neither here nor where we were raised—neither American nor Taiwanese, Australian nor Chinese—we chose to embrace our unique identity. It can be challenging not to fit into any single category, but our eclectic, multicultural influences make us who we are, enriching our lives in countless ways.
